Rooting the Alltel CDMA HTC Hero
[UPDATE - I've noticed some stability issues. I have disabled JIT to see what happens as I've been reading this phone may not have enough memory to JIT properly. It's still MUCH faster than the stock ROM, even without JIT]
These instructions are for the *CDMA* HTC Hero and I tested on an Alltel Hero. The Cyanogenmod ROM I'm using is Sprint branded, which is a cosmetic thing. The MMS fix linked is for Alltel MMS settings, don't use it with a Sprint (or other CDMA) Hero!

Step One - FULLY charge your phone. This is probably the biggest risk for phone damage - battery death during the flash.
Step Two - In settings - Applications on your phone enable "Unknown Sources"
Step Three - Copy the files available at the following URLs to the root folder of your SD Card:

Step Four - Open the Android browser and navigate to this URL:

Download, install, launch, read disclaimer, press button. Unplug phone from charger. Turn phone off. Turn phone on. Turn phone back off.
Step Five - Hold volume down while pressing power, push the HOME button to select recovery, wait for phone to reboot into Darchstar's recovery
Step Six - Backup/Restore, Nand backup, and confirm
Step Seven - Press back, Wipe, Wipe data/factory reset and confirm
Step Eight - Back, flash zip from sdcard, flash the CM 6.0.0, then repeat to flash the google add-on, and finally repeat to flash the MMS fix
Step Nine - Reboot system now and wait
Step Ten - Go into ROM Manager and fix permissions
Step Eleven (NOT required but I recommend for speed) - Go into cyanogen mod settings, performance, ignore the dragons and enable JIT
Step Twelve - Reboot and enjoy!

Actually I have been using the latest Cyanogen nightlies upgrading almost every night, I'm really liking last night's nightly so far...
yep doing the same - seems to be working good - are you using any task managers or killers - i have been using system panel.
No, task killers do more harm than good. I AM using AutoKiller to tweak the minfree tho.

I have been looking for an easy way to root for a long time, and this worked like a charm! If anyone is in doubt, just read the instructions, all will be fine. (I could see someone thinking of extracting zip files to the sd card, don't do that! Just put the whole zip on the sd card!) Thanks again man! You ROCK!
Hey, this worked no problem. One thing I noticed is now my web browser doesn't render flash like it used to. Anything I can do to fix that?

@Michael - No, Flash Lite is a feature of HTC Sense, and Flash 10 requires a newer processor than the Hero has.
@Everyone - There are now much newer versions of Cyanogen as well as Google Apps posted on the Cyanogenmod forums.
I really appreciated the simplified steps. I thought I would point something out to Alltel users.. The Sprint rebranding will screw up your Marketplace downloads section. Meaning, you wont easily be able to regain your apps by simply reinstalling them. You will have to search them back out and then reinstall.
It also appears that using the Cyanogen Rom will cause you to lose your initial backup that was made with Darchstars recovery. I even tried to rerun Darchstars APK with no luck. Or am I nuts?
HTC has 2.1 rom online for Sprint and another smaller carrier but not Alltel. I would like to know I can take it back to stock if needed.
Menu key -> Downloads will get you the downloads folder. I still have my NAND backup no problem, it's saved to your SD. It should be, itself, backed up of course in case something goes wrong - which I fear it may have for you. I still have Darchstar's recovery on my phone, so that's odd too.

Mark, very nicely written and worked perfectly with my Alltel HTC Hero. Can't wait to put it to the test. The only thing I messed up on was failing to back up my contacts, I did a sync prior to rooting using Media Player, but now MP does not recognize my phone, unless I am doing something wrong. Regardless, thanks for the great post!
after reboot how long do you wait mine is at the cyrogen mod animation and just keeps repeating.
Beezie, you didn't wipe data/factory reset in recovery. Go back to recovery (battery pull and volume down + power to get there) and wipe data/factory reset.

well mark i have been trying to root my phone for about 4 days. this is the closest i have been yet. i am running into the same problem as beezie. I saw your suggestion but nothing. I don't have internet at home so i came into town to post this. as i was coming in i thought maybe the cm file was unzipped. so i will go check this. but if this does not work have i bricked my phone? i really don't know what to do at this point. my phone just keeps repeating the cm guy with the circling. also side note i could not download 6.0 so i downloaded6.1 i am not sure if that would make a difference. just wanted to let you know. my email is brandon.kinsey80@gmail.com please help!!!maten
I must do a update to my last post under the name amy. The problem I had was I downloaded cm 6.1 three different times. The problem was windows labeled each on 1,2,3. So it kinda renamed them. Once I figured this out I deleted the number and reflashed. Bam worked just fine. I am using wireless tether right now to type this. Mark thank you so much for your time in doing this. I have been trying to root my phone for 4 days. Would you have any suggestions of where to start. Any suggestions on a uninstaller of programs that are unwanted such as the twitter app. Also is there a calendar widget like the htc along with the clock? Thanks again for doing your thing, you da man!!!!!

Brandon/Amy, your problem wasn't the file name. That shouldn't affect anything. Something just went wrong in the Flash.
Easiest way to remove unwanted programs in the flash is to unzip the file, remove the programs, rezip, and re-sign it. Signing it is critical or else it won't boot.
No idea about a calendar widget.
Hey!! best root i've found so far thanks so much! BUTTTTT i ran into my LAST problem :( everything has worked so far except my phone isn't recognizing my .zip folders i put into my sd card/root folder. now i have, i believe, two other folders in my sd card/root folder. idk if that screws it up but when i go to flash a rom...all it has is the "rootme" please help!! thanks guys
also...how to backup contacts (if nand backup doesn't do that already) and when i flash my rom, will nand recovery recover my apps, contacts, etc and keep the new rom? or will it recover my stock rom still?
NAND recovery would restore the stock ROM. Google will automatically sync your contacts assuming you are using a Google account.
As for the files, you mention "ZIP Folders" - that leads me to believe you unzipped the file. You need to use the ZIP file exactly as downloaded.
I have been using this root for about 2 months but now I can't receive text messages but I can send them. Everything else works but that not sure why? If you know of anythings please let me know Thanks for your time.
